Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir
Winemakers: Nick Spencer and the team at Eden Road Wines
small batch wines from our tiny, single vineyard

We first met winemaker extraordinaire Nick Spencer in the Southern Highlands, before our first vintage. He’s gone on to become one of Australia’s top winemakers, winning a stack of awards (including the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy!) for wines he’s produced. All on his own merits, and nothing to do with us really, but as you can imagine, we’re thrilled he’s still happy to work with Capanno’s fruit.

Each year, in the lead up to vintage, the winemakers work with Paul, inspecting the vineyard, testing and watching the weather, to determine the best possible time to pick. The harvested fruit is loaded into bins and delivered to the Eden Road winery, just south of Murrumbateman, in the Canberra Wine District, where Nick and his winemaking and cellar crew take over, firstly crushing the bunches gently, then de-stemming.

Together, they work hard throughout the various stages of the winemaking process, but “avoid over-thinking it”, preferring to let their wines speak for themselves and express their terroir. Their expertise and experience, and the careful handling of our wines, means that our varietals, Capanno Single Vineyard Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, truly reflect the attributes of the Capanno vineyard. And even better – they’re different year on year.

I said it was my dream to produce wines I could be personally proud of, and I also wanted to see what a small, single vineyard like ours could be capable of. We could not be happier with how things are going, and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
